Star Trek Exhibit

As I stood looking into Captain Picard's ready room, a ship's hallway stretching out behind me, a rush came over me. Then there were a few tears. How much of my childhood did I dream of being on the Enterprise? I was a faithful viewer of TNG when it was on air. Back then Star Trek novels filled my bookshelves and action figures littered the floor next to my girly pink bed.

So, how did I find myself visiting such wonders as the 1701-D bridge and the transporter room?

This spring I had the chance to visit Star Trek the Exhibition at the St. Louis Science Center. This traveling museum exhibit features everything from costumes to sets from the entire breadth of the Star Trek television show and movie franchise. Going to this exhibit was a dream come true.

As you entered the exhibit the captain's chair from TOS is awaiting you with a green screen behind it. We had our photo taken and then made our way into the first part of the exhibit. A large table full of scripts greeted us. The walls were covered in sketches, diagrams, photos, and a mixture of real science facts with information about the Star Trek universe.

Photos were not permitted inside of the exhibit. I wish I could have snapped shots of the large models of ships used in exterior shots on the show. There were also plenty of props from communicators to phasers.

One very cool, large piece was Data's torso inside of machinery used to work on androids. I have to admit I started singing "I Can Make You a Man" from Rocky Horror...

Seeing the costumes on display was pretty shocking because most of them are tiny! It's amazing how slender even male actors are.

Probably, the coolest item I got from the visit was a picture of us on the transporter which had an effect added to it.

Geeky Bridesmaid....Librarian Style?

It's Fishnet Friday and today I am featuring my bridesmaid ensemble from last weekend! The wedding was a lot of fun.

I will do another post featuring some of the fun elements of the wedding, such as the favors. You guys will love them!

So I am wearing green fishnets, sweet lolita shoes from Bodyline Japan, and a Time Turner necklace as one of my accessories.

Yes, a time turner. The bride and I both really love Harry Potter and I don't own very much gold or brass colored jewelry, so I went for it.

After I got everything put together I realized that I looked, in my mind, like a librarian bridesmaid!

It's Fishnet Friday!

The return of Futurama has been most welcome in my circle of friends. I missed the weird mix of pop-culture colliding with that twisted view of the Future. I've also always loved the plethora of references in the show from gaming to sci-fi. Sometimes they've been heavy-handed, but there are always layers of more subtle and even funnier allusions hidden in many episodes.

I caught up to some of the new stories last night including "Proposition Infinity" in which our intrepid crew come to terms with and then try to legalize robosexual marriage. While a clear indictment of Prop 8 in a futuristic setting the writers managed to bring their own special skewering of the situation.

This isn't the first instance of a character in Fishnets in the wonderful world of New New York, but our friend at the Pride Rally pops up quite a few times.

When I started this blog I knew that the one thing I wanted to do for sure was to post a Fishnet Friday segment as often as possible as inspired by a very awesome friend of mine, Etyhl Violet. Fishnets have featured heavily in my wardrobe for many years and I just really like the way they can transform a look and add a touch of rebellion. Little did I know that I would have fishnets appear constantly! I guess they were always there in the dark and geeky things I love.

Ghost and horse marriage is legal!

Finally, I'll end this post with a reference from the episode that aside from the line "Mama said Spock you out" was a fun little nod:

Nerdifacts

Nerdy artifacts from my youth are few and far between. I wish I had video from the 1980's and more pictures of myself. Over this past weekend I visited my family home and ended up digging out a couple of boxes. In them I found a treasure-trove of items from the 90's.

In the 90's I went from jr. high to h.s. to college. In jr. high and high school I was in scholastic bowl, concert choir, the speech/drama team, and an executive officer in the science club. I took every AP science class our school had, including summer field courses in which I got to do surveying for the state, go caving and do some major canoeing. When I graduated I had taken the equivalent of six years of science!

So, how did this nerdy young girl who always had a book in hand dress? Here she is in 1997 toward the end of h.s:

Rocking the all black even then and with my Star Wars tie to boot. Those were the days!

Well, I found in the box I saved some of my geeky ties!
On the left we have a great Star Trek tie. I also found my old ST:TNG communicator pin so I threw that in the photo as well. In the middle we have my dinosaur tie and then finally the Star Wars tie! I know I had many more ties, but I'm not sure if I'll ever find them.

The Star Trek tie was still tied from the last time I wore it. Which, despite the fact that it's at least 14 years old, was probably sometime in the early 2000's. I put it on just for kicks. I think I'm just going to have to start wearing ties again....

Geeky Soap

You've probably seen these on other blogs and geeky sites, but here's a fresh reminder about some very unique soap!

Geeky Clean has an amazing assortment of soaps to choose from. I'm excited to see their booth at Gen Con and I'm even more excited to have soap with a treasure inside of it!

Yes those are d20's in there. I love this idea! I will be giving away the Health bar in a contest this week. So stay tuned!

Next up is Geek Soap! A few days after I ordered my soap a new WoW hearthstone soap appeared on the site. It's awesome. I have to admit that I want it pretty badly. I got two very cool soaps from this site.

The Star Trek bar is very cool. It's wrapped in plastic still hence the weird squiggles. The cartridge soaps make great display pieces in my very eclectic bathroom. It also really does resemble the actual thing in great detail. Here's a comparison with my Game Boy:

Over at Luxury Lane there is even more great soap including Hello Kitty! This is the site where you can get the awesome Carbonite soap.
This picture doesn't do it justice and I left it in its packaging so it's a bit shiny. It's a display soap for me as well since it contains wheat and I am gluten intolerant, but it was well worth it. The level of detail is really awesome.

**I've also found out that both Geek Soap and Luxury Lane will be at Gen Con together in one booth under the G33Kmade banner. Yay! Gen Con is going to rock!**

All three soap makers create little works of art. These soaps are vegan friendly, fun to have, and smell wonderful. Any of these would make great gifts for your gaming buddies.

If you know of any other geeky soap makers let me know. These three are truly artisans at what they do. Having soap like this just adds another bright spot to every day life.
